The harbor is only lightly affected by waves and has a mild maritime climate. Developed by Kumho Resort, it is currently managed and operated as a sports facility. Tongyeong-si is also promoting the Donam-dong Marine Marina Development Project, and a water leisure operator license testing site and the Tongyeong Yacht Club are currently in operation.
The Tongyeong area is located on the South Sea coast and faces the ocean. It has a temperate maritime climate, with an annual temperature range of 23.0°C, so the difference between hot and cold seasons is not severe. The annual average temperature is 14.7°C and annual average precipitation is 1,450.8 mm. Spring (March-May): normal average temperature 13.2°C, precipitation 391.5 mm, and average wind speed 2.7 m/s, with frequent visibility problems caused by fog. Summer (June-August): normal average temperature 23.8°C, precipitation 736.9 mm, and average wind speed 2.5 m/s, with frequent localized heavy rain.
Currents north of Gajodo Island, along the Anjeong route, and near the Tongyeong route that passes from eastern Gajodo to northwestern Chilcheondo are generally not fast, at about 0.5-0.9 kn. Near Chilcheon Channel east of Chilcheondo, flood and ebb currents of about 1.4-1.8 kn occur. Around Yongchodo Island, the current follows the island and shows an almost fully reversing tidal-current pattern. In Janggang Channel between Hansando and Yongchodo, flood currents reach up to 2.9 kn and ebb currents up to 1.5 kn. Hansando is close to the mainland side, so currents there are relatively weak.
