The year's highest high tides occur during the seventh lunar month spring tide, when mean sea level rises to 1.54 m at Jeju Port and 1.8 m at Seogwipo Port. Wind direction can also affect tidal currents: winter northwesterly winds lower tidal height and sea level along the Jeju coast, while summer southeasterly winds raise them. As a result, sea level is highest from June to October.
