Founded in 1986, the Gyeongbuk Yacht Association is located near the base of the western breakwater of Hupo Port, a coastal port. It operates yacht, surfing, and sailing classes in summer to broaden the yachting base and develop athletes, and was built and is operated to host marine sports events such as the Korea Cup Yacht Race and promote the natural scenery of Hupo-myeon.
The Uljin area borders the sea to the east and has southern east-coast topography, with the Taebaek Mountains forming steep slopes toward the East Sea to the west. Influenced by the warm East Korean Current, it is generally mild with a small temperature range, and rainfall is lower than inland areas, although orographic precipitation occurs frequently under northeasterly airflows. The annual average temperature is 12.6°C, annual average precipitation is 1,119.0 mm, and average wind speed is 4.0 m/s. Under the influence of the Okhotsk High, cool, humid easterly winds flow in, making conditions cool.
At Hupo, mean sea level is 0.14 m, spring tidal rise is 0.2 m, and the mean high-water interval is 3 hours 11 minutes.
