以高山稜線為中心的山地具有山岳氣候特性，而雪嶽山陡坡與海相接，形成狹長單調的地形，因此也呈現許多接近海洋性氣候的氣象特徵。春季來自南部地區移動性高氣壓的西南風越過太白山脈時，因山岳效應產生的強風現象「襄杆之風」，以及西南氣流流入時因高山造成的焚風現象、東北氣流造成的降水與低溫現象，都是代表性例子。束草地區年平均氣溫為12.2℃，氣候相對溫和，這是因為四季都受流入東海的海風影響。年平均降水量為1,402.2㎜，在江原道內屬於雨量較多的地區。另外，冬季的暴風現象主要受強烈西北季風影響；4月至5月出現的暴風，則是太白山脈地形因素與氣象因素複合作用下，嶺東地區特有的現象。
